“So You Want To Be A Rock Superstar”: How To Break Into The Music Industry

0

If you’re a music fan (and who isn’t?), you may have dreams of working in what so many people simply call “the industry.” But unless you’re born into it, you may not know anyone who works there, and it can seem unobtainable. Here, though, are some simple tips on how to break into the music industry. With hard work and some direction, you can end up making a living while being around and helping to create music.

Find An Internship

If you’re in college or just out, you are in prime territory to take an internship position. Whether it’s at a major record label or a small community radio station, treat the position like it’s your ticket to the big time. Work hard, be personable, and don’t complain (those three things alone will make you stand out). Make sure to get to know people in all areas of the company, not just those with whom you work closely. Even if you can’t turn the internship directly into a job, it will look great on your resume and connect you with other potential employers.

Join A Street Team

Countless people have gotten their start in the music industry by joining a street team. A street team is a group of people who hands out promotional materials in a given area. Labels are always looking for street teamers, and while it doesn’t usually pay (except in free concert tickets, merch, and the like), it can be a great way to meet and connect with people who are already working in the industry.

Get On The Radio

If you’re in college, getting involved with your college station is one of the best moves you can make. College radio DJs and program directors very quickly become the next generation of music business talent, since they’re already working with artists and label, promoters, trade journals, etc.

If you’re not in college, you can have a similar experience by volunteering at your area college or community radio station. They almost always need help, on-air or otherwise, and the station provides a fantastic place to make connections.

Become An Expert

Are you the person who’s always turning your friends on to new music? Can you guess who the next star is going to be six months before their first hit single? You may be in a perfect position to get noticed as a writer. Before you start seeing your name on the cover of Rolling Stone, you should start your own blog. Even if you don’t garner a huge readership, you’ll have something to show prospective employers that is representative of your taste and style.

Always Be Networking

The music industry can feel insular – like it’s the same forty people switching jobs over and over again. But being around and in the mix is really how to break into the music industry. Get to know people, whether it’s at shows, nightclubs, industry events, dance nights, conferences, lectures, whatever. Parties early in the week, on Mondays or Tuesdays, tend to attract lots of performers and music industry people – so make sure to get extra sleep when you can to make up for those late nights!
