edX was created by  MIT and Harvard as an open-source course creation system to democratize the higher education system.

What makes edX one of the best free educational websites is that it is free for anyone to create a course. Then it’s up to the creator what to charge.

There are also several free courses, but just know that you get what you pay for. The classes put on by established professionals within a niche tend to have a fee, while courses by those trying to battle out of the depths of obscurity tend to be free.
